Linear Motion Application Story – A manufacturer of cheese slicing equipment called.  He said, he was told, ” if you need a solution, call LM76!”

He did, and we solved his problem. The customer is an internationally known manufacturer of cheese slicing equipment. He needed a hard, low friction seal which would also act as a scraper. However, unlike Buna or Nitrile seals which increase friction and trap debris, this application required a seal which would contribute to low friction while having the hardness and dimensional characteristics of a scraper. LM76 machined seals from ETX:

ETX has wear-resistance and dimensional stability surpassing other common wear grade plastics, and excellent resistance to many harsh chemicals, including aggressive food products, cleaning solutions and petroleum products. It outlasts unfilled nylons (PA) by a minimum factor of 8 and lasts a minimum of 50 times longer than unfilled acetals (POM). Even industry-standard wear materials like PTFE filled acetal and oil filled nylon are no match for the performance of ETX. Because of the material’s unique composition, its wear resistance increases as bearing velocities increase. Adding to the product’s strengths are its ability to maintain tight dimensions and close tolerances in wet environments unsuitable for nylon materials.

Further, since ETX has FDA and USDA compliance, it can be used or machined components for food packaging and processing equipment.

Linear Motion – Application Story – LM76 Supplies Linear Bearing for Plating Tower

Linear Motion – Interplex Metals Installation

LM76 - Linear Motion Specialists
Linear Motion - Interples Application Story Linear Motion Problem Solved!

Linear Motion – When Interplex Metals needed linear bearings for their Metal Plating Tower, they called LM76 for a recommendation. Given the details, LM76’s Mike Quinn recommended the SG 35Speed Demon Linear Bearing System. Because the line was down, LM76 cut the rails and had the product shipped the
same day.

Linear Motion - Interples uses LM76 Speed Demon Linear Bearing Systems The supported mast weighs 150 pounds.
Linear speed is slow and the mast has
to adjust per the tension of the reels
( stamped metal frames ). Friction has
to be very low and stiction has to be
non-existent. Engineering liked the idea that SG blocks have adjustable pre-load capability so they could adjust the tension “perfectly.” There are four bearing pads, 2 per side. Because
the cross arm which carries the UHMW rollers cannot move side-to-side,Mike recommended a 5 roller block. (Blocks come in 3,4 &5 roller sizes)
Interplex loves their SG and production
is rolling…once again.

New Seaport Container Scanner uses LM76 OSG 40 Rails and Roller Blocks!

“On January 4, 2007, Congress passed the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act. Included in the bill’s provisions was a mandate that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) scan 100 percent of maritime cargo entering the United States by 2012. Given the fact that approximately 11.6 million cargo containers enter U.S. ports each year, this mandate could cripple the ability of the private sector to move goods on time.” The mandate is to deploy a system that can rapidly scan containers without creating bottle necks. This system is now available.

One of the critical aspects of this new scanner design is the linear rail and roller block system that allows the 2000 pound detector to move vertically. LM76 was chosen to engineer this aspect of the new container system which is now being deployed at port terminals. Mike Quinn of LM76 had this to say about the challenges LM76 faced:  “There were several challenges we had to overcome – none more pressing than the ability to stand-up to the salt air/spray environment. We had to take a system that is not all-weather and make it all weather. Not easy when you have sealed rollers that are steel running on a steel shaft. We had to choose a system that would offer low friction, tolerate contamination and not rust away. Looking over all our products, we chose the OSG roller Block/Rail assembly as our base system:http://www.lm76.com/speed_rail_osg.htm

According to company President John Tarbell: “Each rail is 24 feet long and poses it’s own challenges. We did not want to butt joint rails because the mounting surface is less than flat. If we employed rails that required butt joining – due to the overall length of the rails – we could experience very rough transition points that could negatively affect the life of the bearing block rollers. The LM76 OSG system allows us to construct almost unlimited rail lengths.”

Exploded View of OSG Rail

Staggered Shafting  for Smooth Transitions Rail to Rail

4 Roller Block Feature Open Design

As shown, the OSG rail is a two piece rail that allows you to stagger shafting from 1 section to another so you can avoid butt joining. This makes for very clean transitions from rail to rail.
Next, to protect the shaft from corrosion, we used a special anti-corrosion treatment – Stay-Tough LM 12:

Resulting properties from these chemical and structural composition changes are increased
surface hardness, lower coefficient of friction, enhanced surface lubricity, improved running wear performance, increased sliding wear resistance, and enhanced corrosion resistance.

Next, to protect the rollers from corrosion we chose an enhanced surface treatment that encapsulated the roller, pin and the sealed bearings inside.

The 2000 pound scanner package is raised and lowered via a steel cable. Thus, the OSG linear system does not experience the load directly. The OSG bearings act more as linear guidance for the scanner as it moves throughout its travel.

The original beta system has been in operation for over a year without issue.

Linear Motion Components News – LM76 Congratulates SPACEX On Their Successful Mission to the International Space Station!

Linear Motion – LM76 Congratulates SPACEX On Their Successful Mission to the International Space Station and Return of the Capsule to Earth!

Linear Motion – On May 22, 2012 the SPACEX Falcon 9 2-stage rocket and the Dragon Capsule lifted off from a Cape Canaveral launch pad in Florida beginning a demonstration Mission to the International Space Station.  After a picture perfect launch of the Falcon 9 2-stage rocket and insertion into orbit of the Dragon Capsule, the capsule then executed a series of maneuvers to demonstrate its flight characteristics and it was then captured by the robotic arm and docked with the Space Station.  After unloading food and supplies, the crew of the Space Station loaded items to be returned to earth.

When the transfer was completed the Dragon Capsule was released from the Space Station and began it trip back to earth that ended with a splash down in the Pacific off the coast of Baja California.

Congratulations SPACEX.

Application Story – New CNC Plasma Table employs LM76 SG Speed Demon Linear Bearing Roller Blocks on all major axis of motion.

When a mid west manufacturer of CNC plasma torch cutting systems was contemplating linear motion bearings for their new system, they called LM76. The design called for the following criteria:
1. Low Friction
2. Low Weight
3. Low Cost
That’s it for the LOW requirements. The linear rails and roller blocks had to have sufficient load capability and stiffness. The SG met all design requirements – low and high.
SG linear bearing roller blocks come in 3 configurations: a 3 roller block, a 4 roller block and a 5 roller block. This makes the SG very versatile when you are working with space constraints but require more load capability.
