Here is why linear ball bearings failed in this application: 1. Linear Ball Bearings require lubrication. Grease captured debris, dust and filings make a great lapping compound. As this “gunk” built-up on the shaft, it hardened. With each pass, the linear ball bearings rolled through this paste-like grit which eventually made its way beneath the seals. Once inside, the ball tracks were fouled, the balls stopped rolling and mechanical failure quickly followed. Working with engineering, Mike Quinn of LM76 recommended JET Rail Linear Roller Blocks. Linear Motion – Utilitarian Roller Block & Rail™ from LM76

The Utilitarian Roller Block and Rail system from LM76 is just that…practical. A black anodized aluminum carriage plate which features 4 Delrin® (plastic) wheels pressed over ABEC 1 roller bearings. The rail is a ceramic coated aluminum extrusion which offers a hard, extremely durable running surface. URB offers you 2 carriage plate designs: Option 1 is a square plate with 4) 10-32 mounting holes. Option 2 is a longer and more narrow plate with 4) 10-32 mounting holes and a hand lock assembly. This low friction, maintenance free system is superb for sliding doors, manual assembly lines, camera motion and any other applications where low friction motion is required. URB is not for high loads or moment loading or for applications which require high speed, high accuracy, high loads or rapid oscillation.
